Privacy policy
Last updated 5 October 2026
KneeGuard is a Discord bot that removes harmful links and scams. This page explains what it reads, what it keeps, and for how long. Discord's own privacy policy also applies to everything on Discord.
What it reads
- Messages in channels it can see, including links, images, forwards and polls, to check them for scams. This is why it needs Discord's Message Content permission.
- Basic member details: user ID, username and nickname, account age and when someone joined, to spot raids and staff impersonators.
What it keeps
Messages are checked in memory and not saved. What it does keep, per server:
- Your server's settings, chosen with
/setup. - Offence records (who broke which rule, and when), deleted once they fall outside your server's offence window: 24 hours by default.
- Words from links and messages your moderators confirm as scams, kept without their order so they can't be read back, to catch reworded reposts.
- Fingerprints (perceptual hashes) of images your moderators block, not the images themselves.
Stored data is encrypted. Server settings and blocked-image fingerprints are also backed up, encrypted, to a private GitHub gist.
What it posts in your server
When it acts, KneeGuard posts the details (who, what link, why, what happened) to your log channel, and can send the member a private DM. These messages live on Discord, in your server, under your control.
Outside services
- Public threat lists (malware, phishing and scam feeds) are downloaded to the bot and checked there. Your messages are not sent to them.
- Shortened links are opened to find where they really go, so that site sees a request from the bot's server.
- Images are fetched from Discord's own media servers to fingerprint them.
KneeGuard does not use AI or language models, and nothing is sold or shared for advertising.
Deleting data
When KneeGuard is removed from a server, everything stored for that server is deleted straight away. To ask about or remove anything else, email me.
